loads of people have done it, but from the rock follies it was Julie Covington. then Elaine paige did it and Madonna recently...see the link she did the original and it was re-relesed in 1978 when it got to number one

It's from the musical 'Evita', by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and has been sung by many people.
The musical came out in 1975, and Elaine Paige sang the original.
It was a No.1 hit for Julie Covington in Dec.1976
The most recent hit version was by Madonna, when she starred in the film of the musical.
Incidentally, Evita is based on the life of Eva Peron (Evita was her nickname), the Argentinian 'Spiritual' leader, and was certainly not sung by her, unless from the grave! She died in 1952!

There's 2 versions Colin. Julie Covington of Rock follies fame from 1977. I think that was from the stage version of Eva Peron in which she appeared. Then you have Madonna's effort from a year or so ago.

Incidentally, 'Rock Follies' was the name of the programme. As for the group, they were called 'The Little Ladies' played by Julie Covington, Anna Charlotte Cornwell and Rula Lenska.

julie Covington had a number 1 with it in 77/78 ish. It was also recorded by Madonna and I've got a really good version by Skin'ead O' Connor.

that song was sang by madonna in the movie evita, about the great argentenin evita perone who ruled that country ,,she died at a very young age, and let me just add this that was not madonna best movie so if you have not seen it, you have not missed nothing ..
