Prejudice of the towns people towards Hester

There are several prejudices from which to choose:
men vs. women
women vs. woman
villagers vs. outsiders (English) vs. colonists
puritan vs. pagan (or any religion that is not Puritan)

I would say to choose one of these and narrow the category down, using examples from the text. If you choose, for example, women vs. women, you can examine the ways the townswomen treat Hester--why do they make the accusations that they do? What about her (and women like her) is threatening to them? Remember that prejudice comes in many forms and is just another word for hate. Hate comes from fear. When you get to the root of the fear, you have the gist of the novel, and your essay will be simple.

Is it about Prejudice?

Seems to me to be more about the difference between public punishment and the self torture of hidden guilt.

Hester pays for her "sin" publicly, while Arthur Dimmesdale hides his own guilt and is destroyed by it.
