There is blood red all over the place in the movie...so what's the real significance of it??? Is there one, I mean, other than just being blood red, such as murder or death....is there a real explanation for it???? The mother's nails are red, the kid's shirt is red, the doorknob, the balloon..... what's up with all the red?

I read this somewhere actually... am trying to jog up my memory here, lol=P
I believe that the color Red was M. Night's way of indicating to the viewer that danger was imminent.
Like the scene where Bruce Willis finally gets that he's a dead soul.
As he's trying to grab the doorknob to the basement, it turns Red to show that something bad/ evil happened which then lead to flashbacks as to how he was shot.
Another example, in the movie, "The Village" as Bryce Howard goes into town for medical supplies in order to save Joaquin Phoenix, the ground she walks on had a string of Red flowers.
Shortly thereafter she was attacked by a person (Adrien Brody) in a 'monster' costume.
