Halloween began as a ritual of paganism...through Celtics, Druids, etc...the Christian church tried to surpress it for many years...but eventually co-ocpted it as a pagan holiday in the Christian calender.

Origins revolve around the Celtic celebrations of Samhein (spelling?), and some also believe it's partially a celebration of Dia de los Muertos from Spanish culture as well.
