Reasons Why People Become Homeless

[1] Some are hiding from the law...25%
[2] Some are mentally ill...50%
[3] Some are simply unfortunate and have lost everything due to circumstances beyond their control...25%
I cannot imagine being homeless and sleeping in the cold or the rain or snow with nothing but one blanket. Begging for money to buy a hot-dog and a coke to survive. Some because they could not pay rent and had to leave apartment. Some lost job. Some are controlled by drugs. For women, some because of domestic violence.

Some people in our country, live from paycheck to paycheck, and that is how far away they are from being homeless. Mentally handicapped people make up a good amount of them. Drug addictions are some, run aways, people who cannot work, but the government refuses to help, then there are those who, as incredible as it seems, want to be homeless, but they make up about 1/20 of what the homeless population is.

Society usually thinks homeless people are all druggies who refused to do something with their lives. But I've met homeless who are educated and used to be pretty successful. Its usually cause they fell on hard times and had no support system. You should realize that anyone could become homeless at anytime but some people have family and friends to help through hard times like:

job loss
divorce
depression

Next time, drop a quarter in that cup! ;-)

people become homeless sometimes because of the economy a times they are making around lets say 50,000 a year okay, and suddenly, the company folds and moves out over seas, and, you are paying a mortage, a, car, utilities and the finer things in life like fancy dinerr parties, a boat jacuzi, and you are on top of the world but up to ears iin debt with credit cards. okay the company folds, you start selling off certain things, and you get so far behind in your mortage payments and unemployment was never intended too pay for your past fancy lifestyles you wrre riding high on that 50,000 a year and then crash its gone the job home car, and everything you cant make ends meet and no jobs poof!! another eason is due too alocholl, and drugs, and, people who have served 20 years out of there lives coming out of prission, no jobs no prospects. and sometimes duue too divorrcess and, some people out there belive it at one time had fancy college degress but, chose too sa too hell wiith the systemm and chose to be on the strets. and, more and more mental hospitalls are cuting there budgets and staff and turning the mentally ill into the strets too. its a never ending cycle for the homeless these especially in mental insututions the states cant afford it no more with housiong medicall costs syyrocketing.

Medical problems will do it often times. Medical issues are expensive and unexpected.

It's also estimated that 1/3 of the homeless population have serious mental illness.

Another large part of our homeless population are single women and children. Sometimes it's hard to work and pay for child care and afford all the expenses that comes with having kids.

Sometimes when someones house burns down or gets taken out by a tornado and they have no insurance.

Sometimes when single moms get abandoned by the kids father, that can lead to homelessness for a while.

Some people lead nomadic lifestyles by choice and hence can be considered homeless to a degree.

I don't think if you asked homeless people that any one of them would say this is the lifestyle they chose....or that this is what they dreamed about when they were a child.

If you area doing a paper or really want to understand, why not volunteer your services at a soup kitchen, and during Thanksgiving many organizations need extra help to collect and give out food.

Perhaps you heart is leading you....but your mind wants to understand first.....I believe you are developing your true spirit., and that's a very good thing.

May your understanding be truely blessed.

it is rarely their fault. alcholism and drug addiction lead some to homelessness but big factors are company downsizing and the high cost of living. minimum wage does not cut it for a family. especially if you must pay for childcare. mental illness is another factor. mentally ill people can stay in hospitals only if they are a danger to themselves or others and without hospitals most can not afford medication because they can not keep a job. i have a mentally ill daughter who lives from state to state. she is welcome here but does not have the correct state of mind to know that the streets are not safe for her.

I'M A EX-HOMELESS PERSON WHO IS IN RECOVERY OF THE WORLD. I WAS DESOLATE AND MENTALLY ILL FOR MOST OF MY HOMELESS DAYS. I CARED ABOUT NO ONE OR ANYTHING BUT MOSTLY I DIDN'T CARE ABOUT MYSELF. I HAD MANY FAMILY MEMBERS AND SO CALLED FRIENDS YET WAS VERY MUCH ALONE IN MY PAIN AND MISERY. NO ONE UNDERSTOOD AND MANY STILL DON'T. I FOUGHT THE DEMONS THAT POSSESSED ME SPIRITUALLY AND PHYSICALLY. ADDICTIONS AND HABITS THAT CAME FROM YEARS OF ABUSING MYSELF AND BEING ABUSED BY OTHERS FROM CHILDHOOD. MOST HOMELESS PEOPLE R VERY INTELLIGENT BEINGS WHO R LOST WITHIN THEMSELVES. OTHERS CHOSE TO BE HOMELESS FOR WHATEVER REASON DRIVES THEM TO BECOME A HERMIT AND WITHDRAW FROM A VERY CRUEL SOCIETY. MOST OF US NEED HELP, MENTAL HELP AND R TOO SMART TO GET IT OR TOO PROUD TO ASK FOR HELP. OUR MINDS ARE SO DISTORTED AND REALITY ISN'T OUR REALITY IT'S URS. WE JUST EXIST TO EXIST, DAY BY DAY, MINUTE BY MINUTE, SECOND BY SECOND. I MADE IT THOUGH, INTO MY OWN LITTLE STUDIO APT. BUT SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE JUST RUNNING AND NOT STOPPING UNTIL I'M TIRED OUT. SOMETIMES I STILL FEEL THE WALLS CAVING IN ON ME, BUT I SURVIVE IT THROUGH THERAPY AND HELP FROM MY CHURCH. THANK GOD HE HASN'T ABANDONED ME. BUT ONCE I FELT ABANDONED EVEN BY HIM (GOD). HOPE I ENLIGHTENED UR CURIOSITY? IF U WANT TO KNOW MORE CLICK ON MY AVATAR, TODAY I'M AN OPEN BOOK AND WANT TO EDUCATE THOSE THAT WANT TO KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE WHERE I WAS. I WENT TO HELL AND AM NOW BACK BUT DON'T KNOW HOW LONG I CAN HANG ON OR IF I'LL EVER SLIP AGAIN. ONE DAY AT A TIME (CLICHE I KNOW BUT IT WORKS).
