The medical term is "incompetent cervix". It would be very unusual for that to be the cause of a miscarriage at six weeks - it usually happens no earlier than the second trimester. The cause is unknown. The treatment is simple: once a pregnancy is confirmed and the health of mother and unborn is determined to be acceptable, a suture is tied in the cervix much like a drawstring. Also, the mother may be placed on bedrest for the last few weeks of gestation. When labor begins, the obstetrician must go in and clip the suture so that the cervix can dilate without harm. It goes without saying that a woman who has lost a pregnancy like that is considered "at risk" and should be monitored more closely than women not so at risk...

Its called an incompetent cervix. Its where the cervial tissue isn't strong enough, and cannot handle the stress of pregnancy, causing it to open early.

There is no actual known reason for this to happen at this time. I am sorry to hear about the miscarriage.
