Goods can be traded by sea, road, rail, and air. More trade routes mean more goods, which means more people to buy and sell those goods; people who require services, creating even more jobs for more people who need entertainment, creating jobs for entertainers that do not produce goods, but attractb more people to see their shows, who in turn need food, housing, and clothing, etc., etc.

Cuz when they were first started, it was easy to ship them materials. people moved there, and old habits die hard.
