Gotta be Blood Meridian, but this is a trendy pick. My reason is that it's all laid bare in that novel, the vitals: blood, violence, a code. It also opens up this vast idea of "border" that he explores in his next 4 novels--clearly something worth thinking about. I also like The Crossing--sort of the philosophical codicil to the border trilogy, maybe McCarthy at his most philosophical. Just bought the new one...looking forward to reading it.

"He rode back in the dark. The horse quickened its step. The last of the day's light fanned slowly upon the plain behind him and withdrew again down the edges of the world in a cooling blue of shadow and dusk and chill and a few last chitterings of the birds sequestered in the dark and wiry brush. He crossed the old trace again and he must turn the pony up onto the plain and homeward but the warriors would ride on in that darknes they'd become, rattling past with their stone-age tools of war in default of all substance and singing softly in blong and longing south across the plains to Mexico."
from "All The Pretty Horses".
How in the world does anyone write with such beauty, such precision? Best book? Goodness, it's so hard to say. This one ("All The Pretty Horses") just resonates. "Child of God" is bizarrely entertaining. "Blood Meridian" is unsurpassed in its visons of horror. I like the entire Border Trilogy, but think "The Crossing" may be the weakest but still a marvel.
Is there any writer in America who writes like McCarthy? Every book is a treasure of the use of the English language.

I have liked some more than others, but my favorite is "Suttree" because McCarthy truly illuminates the lives of people that we would ordinarily overlook as uninteresting derelicts, and makes each one worthy of our attention and affection.
In addition, he has kept his usual stratospheric (and sloppy) philosophy that made "No Country for Old Men" so exasperating to a bare minimum.

a million. Blood Meridian 2. the line i've got no longer examine The sundown constrained in play variety, yet Tommy Lee Jones' filmed version of it grew to become into very superb. i'm hoping field directs Blood Meridian. Franco is cool, yet in addition overexposed and according to danger a coloration too in love with himself. it is all come crashing down somewhat after the Oscars and Your Highness. enable a director with actual adventure and credibility (interior the mattress room and little young infants are the two masterpieces, and he acted under Kubrick's direction in Eyes extensive close) cope with the type of fabric.
