I've recently taken a 180 degree turn in living a healthy lifestyle by eating right and working out. So, when I hit the gym I need a way to step it up a level. I do this by listening to a real motivating song called "The Game" by Drowning Pool. Listening to this song helps me get into what I like to call "The Zone." This song really elevates my determination to push myself a little harder in order to reach my personal fitness goals. There is something mystifying about music that gets us to perform to best of our abilities. Hey, if it worked for Rocky then I can't see why we all can't become champs.

When running on the treadmill and I'm really ready to push my pace I'll flip my iRiver to my Rammstein folder. Asche Zu Asche has a very fast beat and the guitar really gets my legs moving. I'll finish up my last mile or so jamming to this song and Laichzeit.
Usually anything with a fast beat and good guitar gets me going.
I also have a "running tunes" folder that contain all my favorite running tracks so I'm never without my motivational tunes!
I don't run with music outside but with the new iPod nano and what Nike is doing with it's new shoe sounds like I need an upgrade and will start using my tunes outside.

You are gonna get a thousand different answers depending on opinion alone. Why not ask what song QUALITIES are the best or what TYPES of songs are best? I mean you don't generally wanna work out to Pink Floyd...
I think the qualities you should look for are a driving rhythm, upbeat tempo, and a personal quality that means something to you, personally.
My personal songs would be "Gimme the Prize (Kurgan's Theme)" by Queen (from the movie Highlander) and "Right Now" by Van Halen. However, I also think the song "Descargada" by Basil Poledouris- also known as the Gladiator Theme from the Conan movie- probably appelas to a LOT of people as a Power Song...

"I'm Not Giving Up" by Omnisoul. It should be the motto/mantra/power song for all of us! Available on I-Tunes I think, also being played in many stadiums during media time out. I love the way it makes me want to increase, go for the power and hang in there! "Forever Young" from SYMBOL, found on the Initial D Fourth Stage soundtrack. It's a driving Eurobeat song with some great bass and synthesizers. From what I hear, Eurobeat is used as "power" music in a lot of exercising instances.

Well, while the question is somewhat rhetorical, and meant more to advertise, I suppose I'll entertain the concept.
My current PowerSong happens to be "Forever Young" from SYMBOL, found on the Initial D Fourth Stage soundtrack. It's a driving Eurobeat song with some great bass and synthesizers. From what I hear, Eurobeat is used as "power" music in a lot of exercising instances.
If it's not Eurobeat, it's anything from early-to-middle-years Oingo Boingo. Energetic, fun, and musically inclined, they never cease to keep me up and running.

Tool - Rosetta Stoned from 10,000 Days. Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann) sets it up and then from there on, it is all energy. In all, it is 14:57 minutes of pure motivation. It really kicks in at the 6:02 minute mark, climaxing at the 8:38 mark, then carying on until the end...
Some may not "get" Tool. Most simple minds won't.
