The discoloured (BROWN)coolant is a VERY common problem on that partticular vehicle equipped with the 3.0L OHV V6, not the DOHC. There was a recall a while back that involved re-routing the heater hose. But it wasn't a SAFETY recall, so I would think it's expired by now. Are you sure it's working on defrost AND FLOOR. Usually, if it only works on defrost, it means you have a vacuum supply problem, because defrost mode is the default setting. If not, somewhere in the vacuum circuit in the mode selection switch itself is not functioning. As far as the lack of heat is concerned, you could have a stuck open thermostat, although not likely. Check for equal temperature in BOTH heater hoses. If not, you have a flow problem, possibly broken fins on the water pump. Is it overheating? To flush out the system, will require SEVERAL THOROUGH flushes through every component in the cooling system, which includes the heater core, the engine block, and most importantly the radiator, in order to resolve your brown coolant issue. Hope this helps.

Discolored coolant is probable old, have your coolant drained and the coolant system flushed. Poor heat is from a worn out or weak thermostat, have that replaced when the coolant system is flushed. The problem your having with the air only going to the floor and defrost is probably a broke or lose vacuum line (under the hood or in the dash) engine vacuum is what is used to actuate the under dash baffles to direct the air flow.

Well Like the auto tech suggested on most. Flush the coolant. Not really change the thermostat, unless your having an overheating problem. Besides replacing that door in the box under the dash, I'd look for a broken vacuum line, or disconnected one first. The door switches are mostly controlled by vacuum nowadays. Hope these help, and good luck.

The discolored fluid is probably from someone mixing the wrong types of coolant. You need a killer flush. And make sure you always use the same antifreeze. Green and orange can turn into brown goop if you mix them.
The vacuum actuator might be bad on your vent controls. They're made to default to defrost if they quit since that's the one thing you have to have sometimes.

This will be fun...
Flush the radiator... Use a flush aid (Prestone Power Flush works well) Replacing the thermostat isnt a bad idea either - as long as your at it. Fill it back up and that shoud fix the heat problem.
NEXT... either your controls are faulty (not very likely) or your blend actuator is stuck. This is expensive to have someone else fix... get a haynes manual and study up.

flush coolant system, new thermostat, and apparently the upper doors in the dash of your heater are not opening.
