Well, federal min. in America is $5.50 per hour, though in a kitchen most places will start you off a little higher then that. I think the lowest I've seen a resturant pay is $6.50 per hour for a food server.

in Michigan it's $2.63/hour plus tips. but let me warn you that the money may be good now but the effects of being a waitress on the body are not worth the job. i was a waitress for about 3 years and had to quit because i got carpal tunnel in both my hands, i eventually had to have surgery because it got to a point where i could not even drive. so weigh your options very carefully.

When I was a server, I didn't make very much at all, but the employers do this because they know you will make tips if you are any good.

Most places your actual hourly wage will be $2.13. However, when you factor in tips, you can be making much more, especially on a busy shift. I have left with $150 after a slower shift.
