Everything from the high ceilings and columns to the stained glass windows had to do with expressing the spiritual beliefs at the time. I can't tell you everything...as I remember being lectured on this for a week! Also things changed over time and the structures vary according to the origin.

gothic architecture was a great achievement in the history of architecture. it was a 'visual and tangible' bible, you may say.
in this sense, this edifice, the whole structure of a gothic architecture, became 'corpus christi', the body of christ.
so, anybody involved in the liturgy inside this structure had been absorbed into a communion with christ.
