the best thing to have done would be to have fought it with your bare hands like a man....come on, it's just a mountain lion, what kind of man are you?

I've been training myself not to do the same thing. Their natural instinct is to run after anything that runs away from them. Professionals say that you should keep your eyes on them and slowly back away until you are a safe distance, then turn and continue walking away, keeping a watchful eye out for the Mountain Lion. Showing fear is what their prey does, so don't be their prey.
Once I can get to a phone, I would call, 911 or animal control or what ever they have in your area.

I certainly wouldnt have ran, that triggers thier prey drive and usually makes them chase you. Also if there was a mountain lion in my yard it would probably be the one running the other way because 2 dogs and a human are a little to much to take on.

You better run faster than a girl next time. You were lucky this time that you did not have a lion responding to his chase instinct and ending up on your back. There is a very good reason why the average girl does not run as fast as the average man, but next time use discretion in your comments. " I ran like a fool ", would have been better phraseology.

Probably the exact same thing, since I've never been arond a big cat that didn't want to eat me (earned me the nickname, "Happy Meal" at the zoo next to the tiger cage, once).
But I have cats at home (who don't want to eat me, thank God), and I know that they'll chase anything that moves. Lasers, ribbons, toy mice, most things smaller than they are, etc. I've heard they can see in color, but I KNOW that their vision homes in on anything that moves. If I thought about it, even for a second, I might at least back away slowly, directly away from it (as opposed to moving to either side, as to stay in the exact same part of its vision as I got farther away). I never exactly took lessons in escaping mountain lions.
Probably a good thing you at least saw it. That means it wasn't hunting you, right? Otherwise, your weak human senses wouldn't have seen it in time to do anything, methinks.

I used to live in Florida, like way out in the country. We had all kinds of wildcats and other things like black widows and snakes, too. Even bald eagles. I was always more scared for my kids than myself. I'd have done the same thing! Glad you made it. In the future, keep a shotgun near the back door. I'm not encouraging you to kill wildlife, but if it's you or the cat.....let it be the cat!!

Sounds to me like you ran like a guy (why do you throw in a gratuitous sexist comment in a perfectly reasonable question?) You did good. But, as humans encroach more and more on wild animals' homes, they have a tougher time and are reduced to eating what's available...dogs and cats. Call the State Wildlife Control phone number and report what you saw. They will relocate it to a more remote area.

Where the hell do you live? Well if i happen to see a mountain lion in my backyard, i would calmly back away and if it comes close i would spread my legs and arms to appear bigger, make noises, and walk slowly towards it, it scares the animal off that way. I would then call animal control. ........ running is a horrible idea, and you better watch your back.

Hmm, instinct would say run, but common sense and curiosity would tell me to stay in place unless shelter (your back door) was within close reach. With most wild animal attacks - they are looking for an easy meal. If you stand your ground, your chances of survival are much better.

Walk slowly and quietly back into the house. When safely inside I would scream at it to scare it away. A couple months ago I saw a fairly large black bear in my driveway. Luckily I was in my house.
