I mean not just at restaraunts anymore. It's the donut shop, the bagel shop, the coffee shop, the local burrito shop and if that''s not enough. Today I went out to eat breakfast at the local coffee shop and they had a separate tip glass for the cooks. I thought the waiter/waitress gave a percentage...I do tip my server to eat, but I'm not gonna tip every Tom, Mary or Juana. What do you think? I tip well for good sevice by the way...... ;)

Where I live, even the counter at the corner store has a tip jar. Tips are ment to pay for a service. Most service workers are paid below minimum wadge ( such as waiter, bartender or delivery person). Their tips are suposed to make up the difference in pay. I agree with you. I only tip for a service provided. The corner store does not provide a service, if you dont pay for your items, you get arrested. That is not a service. That is the Law. If you go to www.tripsmarter.com They will explain how much and who to tip in almost every state in the USA. ML I am a house keeper at a Guest House. I do provide a service, I take people clean towels and make their beds, I have even done things for people out of the ordanary. Please tip at a hotel. My tips usually provide food for me because my wages barely cover my living expenses.

Now don't you get fed up with the "they only work for a couple of bucks an hour and they rely on the tips"? Too bad get a real job tipping is for those who give you really good service. Every time I arrive at an establishment where tipping is the norm, I have an imaginary pile of cash on the table and it get bigger or smaller according to the service. However the truth is they are paid to do a job to begin with so remember tipping is a bonus!

I usually pay 20% of my restaurant bill as a tip to the waiter/waitress. As far as hotels, motels, coffee shops, etc., No tip.

Pretty soon one will be forced to tip the Boy Scout for helping one cross the street. Geesh.

No you're not expected to tip everywhere. Some of the restaurant is kinda tacky by leaving a tip jar at every corner. I would tip those that serve me. I owned a restaurant and we do many take out. I don't put a tip jar in the counter. If a customer like to tip they will leave it for those that serve them w.o obligation.

the reason why at restaurants, is because alot of those waitresses only get paid around 2 something an hour, and they make most of their money on tips, with out the tips, i dont think that they would want to be working there

Servers take positions as waitpersons because they expect to be tipped for delivering proper service to their customers and they work hard to remain courteous and attentive in order to achieve their goal. Cook, Maitre'd, dishwasher, prep people have no right to horn in on hard earned tips of Servers. If they want a tipped position, let them do the grunt work.

I agree with you. But have you noticed that people put tip jars EVERYWHERE now? At the ice crem parlor, at the convenience store, and at Chipotle too. Basically if you put one out then people will put their change in. Free and easy money! Also, I used to just tip the people who carry your luggage upstairs in hotels but I read you're supposed to leave at leave $3 to $10 in your hotel room everyday for the cleaning staff. Huh?

That is true. But one thing I don't understand why Starbucks has a tipping jar. They are a franchise and at the prices they have for coffee they are definitely not getting my tip.

the tip is supposed really to be given for good service, its sad that alot of people in the industry is expecting to received as such even if they give you the lousiest service in the world, they still expect to be given tip, i think it about time that the industry try to educate their employees that tips is for good, respectful, courteous and prompt service not otherwise, and also for the business owner to pay their employees the right wages and not to make their employees rely on the tip that their customer is giving.
