My son has missed a lot of school because he has been in and out of the hospital. I was told the school has to make accomodations, and that it is something called a 503. I am in Ohio. Would you please helpme find info about it? Thank you!

My son has mild asperger's, byut the school won;t help him. After us paying for two years of intervention, they did an MFE and found him ineligible. An independent eval (done by their people) concurred. SO I have no hope for that.

We had documentation of Asperger's and other problems and got refused for an IEP. WHat is the difference with a 504? Our son has been in the hsopital for casovagel syncope that caused a brain trauma (concusssion) at school). He wears a heart monitor and has missed a ton of school.

It depends on the medical diagnosis and how that diagnosis affects him in school. If his medical condition impacts his ability to learn, or if he has specific needs that impact his safety within the school, he might be eligible for an individual educational plan (IEP). If his medical condition doesn't impact his learning, but he needs accomodations to functional to his maximum potential, then there is a plan called a 504 that will help the school provide those accomodations for him. Both plans require medical diagnosis and, often, evaluations by certain specialties in the school (OT, PT, Psychology, Speech) to determine eligibility. Some districts prefer to not do 504's because it costs the district money that is not reimbursable by the government. Talk to your school nurse and/or social worker. They will be able to help decide if he is eligible for accomodations in the school. Good luck.

Hi, I am a teacher in Connecticut. I believe it's actually a 504. It's a part of special education law that accomodates for students like your son. Call your son's guidance counselor and request a meeting to determine his 504 status. A group of teachers and counselors will meet with you (and your son, possible) to decided what accomodations are necessary. For instance, your son may be allowed extra time to complete assignments, seeing that he's missed so much school. Good luck.
