"Kerry told a group of California students on Monday that those unable to navigate the country's education system "get stuck in Iraq" http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061031/ap_on_go_pr_wh/white_house_kerry

This is absolutely amazing, he literally accuses people, who willfully enlist, of being idiots or the lowest rung of society without any other choices. Again, John Kerry is a US Senator. Theres no question it will have some effect, but my question is, what is the ceiling here...how bad of an effect can this have?

he was speaking to young people who have had the opportunity to get a college education. The "kids" know how hard it is for some people to get the money, grants and good grades to get into college. I remember quite a few people in the military who joined to get an education and just to have a decent paying living. Among those people there is no ambiguity...they joined out of need. Many might tell you that what Kerry said is absolutely correct. Kerry's point was that college is too expensive for most and that many people who are privileged (such as many in the present administration) do not serve if a draft is required. If things get worse there very well may be a draft. I think the President was fighting dirty like he always has.

Well you're not going to believe this, but wacky far left liberals Chris Mathews and Kieth Olberman are accusing the entire Republican party of taking what I consider to be a CRYSTAL CLEAR quote out of context. They even go so far as to suggest that Republicans must think the public is STUPID if they think they will fall for the "LIE" that the quote was referring to the troops and not Bush. There are some major problems with that STRETCH to put this into the context that they are referring to. #1, Bush is not "stuck in Iraq" like many troops are. #2, Bush is a well educated successful person.

I think the REAL insult is to think that the people are STUPID enough to fall for this ridiculous defense of Kerry.

And in response to Tom Collins - I served in the USMC as a liberal (yes, I was young and dumb) and I was a total outcast. Virtually EVERYONE there were conservatives. You may have a point that RICH CONS don't serve, but I can tell you from experience that hardly any liberals, rich or poor serve.

Not much. Recruitment was way down before he said anything -- standards have been lowered and the age limit raised up forty.

He never accused anyone of being idiots, and it is a fact that people at the lower end of the social spectrum join the army as a way to get a college education and move up in society.

I don't think many college bound upper middle ot middle class peole were volunteering before -- that was Kerry's point, rather badly made.

So now this is talking point number one for every con and con pundit in America -- they will distort and repeat and distort and repeat for the next week.

I'm thinking it will come back and bite him in the butt like so many of his other intelligent comments have. It's true that Kerry went to Nam, but he later called his fellow mates killers, and ran when the real action started.

I very seriously doubt it will effect enlistment.

Remember that this is the same fellow who "voted for it before I voted against it. "

He didn't demean the choice to serve.

He should have demeaned the upper middle class white students who think serving in the military is a joke.

Go to any white or mostly white suburban high school and I defy you to find any kids signing up for the military. Almost none do. And those kids are the children of Republicans.

Now you know why he lost the last election, he is a phony and a blowhard, and I hope not one military person active or retired will ever vote for him, after his insensitive and stupid remark. He needs to be drummed out of politics.

That is not what he meant. At least he wore the uniform and served, unlike, Tony Snow, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, and for all practical purposes, Dubbya.
