My wife refrigerated her breast milk last night. She took out her breast milk from the refrigerator at 12 pm and did not refrigerate it since. How many hours can breast milk go unrefrigerated before it is considered spoiled??

While most perishable foods will spoil after 4 hours, breast milk is a special exception. Those awesome anti-infectives found in breast milk - which are there to build up a baby's immune system - are also very good at slowing down the bacteria that would spoil the milk. All of which means that breast milk will "keep" longer than most other foods.

To answer your question specifically, breast milk stored at room temperature (between 66-72 degrees Fahrenheit) will keep for up to ten hours. If the room is warmer, the milk will keep for up to six hours; milk will keep in a cooler room for up to 24 hours. The "shelf-life" of refrigerated and frozen milk also varies, depending on the temperature inside your appliance and even where you place the milk within the appliance. It depends on the temperature of the environment. If the environment is cool, it can last eight hours as long as it is freshly pumped (vs. heated up). It's very easy to tell if the milk is going bad - it will stink just like cow's milk, with a sour smell. BM does not stay good for an abnormally long time - it can turn rancid just like any other milk if left out for too long in a warm environment. Since your milk was for a good part of the night in a cool bag it should be ok but do the sniff test to be sure.

An hour. After that you should throw it out, esp if the baby has drank from the bottle, that increases the chance for germs and the baby to get sick. It will keep only keep 24 in the fridge if it is not frozen, and it can keep up to 3 months if it is frozen in bags. If you think that it may not be safe for baby, then you should probably just throw it out anyway, i mean its breastmilk, there's plenty more where it came from.

You shouldn't leave breast milk out longer than four hours. If it is left out longer is has the posssibility of not being good for the baby. It could spoil or just not taste right to the baby.

The American Restaurant Association says after a food spends 4 hours in the "danger zone" 41 to 140 degrees it is no longer safe to eat/drink.
