Like any company or service, one bad incident can damage the reputation of the company. In Dell's case it was the power supply/battery for it's Inspiron Laptops. Because of a flaw in the battery, it was shorting out and causing fires in laptops.
Because of this, many people consider there to be a problem with the entire line.
Consider, however, the number of Dell computers and laptops which HAVE NOT burst into flames.
Do your research through the internet, and find out the pros and cons for the computer you are considering. Remember, even if you get a product with a spotless record and great refereces, you could still be the first person to experience the problem.

Dell laptops are good, function well and are cost effective. However, in India they do not allow even to see the sample piece of the notebook physically before purchase.
Do not go by feedback of one person. Enquire the specific problem faced by the individual and direct the problem to the Dell officials for their answer and then exercise your discretion.

Dell's are GREAT!
If you're going to buy a new computer and not build it yourself, I would DEFINITELY suggest Dell.
I bought my parents one about 3 years ago and it has been great!
And the company I work for (A Computer Technical Support company) just bought all of the technicians Dells earlier this year, and we all LOVE them!

My brother and my Dad both have Dells and as they both work from home they get used constantly and they haven't had any problems and have always spoken very highly of the customer service
Plus they're bargainous
I've got a Sony Vaio TX3 myself though and I LOVE it - it's the nicest, shiniest most beautiful thing I've ever bought - but then I do need to get out more

If I don't build a system myself, I buy a dell.
Just don't get a low end system, not that they are bad, but that you'll be unhappy with performance. Just make sure you get at least 512mb ram and a pentium 4. Don't get a celeron.
I've been very happy with dell, I am disappointed with my IBM Thinkpad (post lenovo).

Check out Alienware computers (www.alienware.com)..If you can afford one I would recommend getting one...also Smart Computing gave them a higher customer support rating than any other computer company including Dell, Compaq, and Gateway...Good Luck.

Dells are hard computers to upgrade, but i see this is in the laptop and notebook section, so i'd go for it because you can't update laptops and notebooks that much anyway.. there desktop PC's aren't recommended though. People say they are crap because they run slightly slower..they only run slower because they come with so much software..get rid of it and don't use there trial security software and you'll be fine, don't get rid of things you'll use though.

I'm on my fourth Dell system and I have one of their laptops too.
I've never had any problems with them.
My laptop is one with the battery under recall and they took care of replacing it immediately.
They're a great company and they stand behind their product and that's good enough for me.

I have a Dell Inspiron - it's fine (fingers crossed . . .). And the support guy gave me his name and direct line number to call if there were any problems.
