Everybody is biased. You need to look into the background and motivations of people giving you the information as well looking into their sources of information. You have to do some extra work and not expect to be spoon fed information. Read the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal to get contrasting views for strarters. Read a Rush Limbaugh book and Al Franken and see who you think is more credible.

I think it is interesting that people don't examine what they call mudslinging and deceiving information. If a candidate talks about the opponents record - that is considered negative. In reality if the candidate does not have a good record and has not done what he has promised then his opponent has every right to make it a matter of public record. It is usually the reason the opponent got into the race. What is mudslinging and lying is when it was brought out that George Allen had some Jewish ancestry - that has no place in a race.

I have seen a race where the opposition party put out a mailing that said the opponents candidate was only 12 years out of high school. She held four jobs in eight years and had moved four times. She never owned property or paid property taxes. She has always rented. She moved into the district she was running in just before filing for office. She talks about reducing taxes but what does she know about them. I consider the ad to be fair - it is calling into account her background and her knowledge of the issues.

To get unbiased and factual information you have to do some research. In this day and age of technology I would bet that every candidate has a website. Go to your candidate's website and read his stand on the issues. Be aware of what the position they are running for can accomplish. For example, if someone is running for City Council and they talk about education - check to see if the city council has any influence over education. In most communities they elect a School Board of Education. If that School Board gets its funding from property taxes or special levies and does not get it from the City Council then talking about education is a smoke screen. You must research what the position is, what are its responsibilities, who does it impact, and what can realistically be accomplished. Then compare your candidates stands to what you have learned. Try to attend one or two debates or town meetings. Everyone has a different perspective - you must examine your priorities and desires and then balance them against your candidates stands.

Many of us will vote Republican in the upcoming election. We are not only voting for our candidates but we are also voting against the affiliation with the vitriolic left wing liberals. I certainly do not want Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Howard Dean, Chuck Schummer, Hillary Clinton or Ted Kennedy to have any more influence or power than they have now. They will bring our country to a standstill and hand it over to the terrorists. They have no programs except to raise taxes.

Do Research.
