My girlfriend recently joined a fitness center. She is concerned because when she runs, she finds it causes her to urinate. Is that ever happened to anyone? What might be the cause? She is 26.

First of all, she's lucky you're so understanding and can talk to you about things like this... a lot of guys would be repulsed and even mean to her about it!

It sounds like she has Stress Urinary Incontinence. A lot of people find that muscular stress (running, for one; jumping jacks; also a sudden cough or sneeze) can cause them to urinate a little. Childbirth can cause or worsen the problem because it stretches the muscles of a woman's pelvic floor, which are also the muscles that help hold in urine; though lots of women both with and without children have this problem.

The easiest and least expensive remedy is for her to practice Kegel exercises. (This is one of the many benefits of Kegels). To do one, she should tighten her pelvic floor muscles (if she doesn't know how, they are the same muscles used to stop the flow of urine midstream, so she can practice first on the toilet if she needs to). She should tighten little by little, until the muscles are completely clenched, hold for a count of three, and release little by little (clench and release each take about five steps and hold each step for one second). Sex experts reccommend doing hundreds of reps a day; fortunately results don't take long for her to notice and these exercises can be done discreetly, just about anytime and anywhere.

There is surgery that can help fix this problem, if the Kegels don't help and it's truly out of control... if your girlfriend feels she's at that point she should discuss her situation with a doctor, who can help find the best option for her.

Good luck!

Could be due to the blood flow/heart rate in her body, making her other fluids flow faster ??
