Basically there are two types of aqueduct

(1) The more well-known ones, are basically bridges for water. They are used on parts of artificial waterways (especially canals) so that the waterway remains level, where the land drops away. The alternative would be to build a series of locks so that the water level could drop down in stages and then rise again. This would be an even greater engineering task than an aqueduct, and would be tremendously time-wasting for canal users.

(2) The other type, whilst still conveying water, could be as simple as large pipes. This is a feature of (a) irrigation systems, and (b) more importantly the supply of water for domestic and industrial consumption.

I hope this is clear now.
