With voter turnouts hanging around 50% for national elections and 25% or less in some local elections, I think we can presume that most "dangerously uninformed ignoramuses" don't regularly vote,.
Besides, How do you define "uninformed ignoramuses"? People who disagree with your own positions?
I trust ignorant voting masses over a dictator or small "ruling" class any day of the century. There is a reason why monarchies have disappeared in general, and why dictators need guns to keep their own citizens in line...

nicely if an thought of ways democracy works is according to what we've faith in accordance to the sturdy issues we pay attention approximately it ,..then evidently to be promising....on the different hand if any form of government is genuinely heavily analyzed some discrepancy's start to emerge. working example ( and not that i'm a Republican in any respect) yet In a democracy if fifty one% of the human beings vote for something that hurts forty 9% of the human beings ,..than the forty 9% grow to be slaves to the fifty one% decision. In a republic ninety 9% won't be able to eliminate the freedoms of one million%. A democracy is like 2 wolves and sheep vote casting on whats for dinner. In a republic the sheep could have a gun.

You have to look at what is the alternative to democracy. The alternative is for the people to be RULED by someone or some group of people. Who is going to choose who that person is or group of people are?
The way that rulers come to be rulers is that the most power hungry, corrupt, and blood thirsty people murder and intimidate themselves into power.
Once in power, they oppress the people and keep them as poor as possible in order to take the fruits of their labor from them. This is how the rulers are able to live in riches and luxury without doing any work themselves.
There are only 2 choices. One is to have a democracy, the other is to be a slave. For me, I would rather not be a slave.

Democracy only really works properly if there is true choice, and the populous is educated sufficiently such that they are capable of making an informed decision.

Depends on the culture and the system of laws.
The constitution has a number of mechanisms which protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority.
The American culture, overwhelmingly, respects the rule of law.
Some other countries' attitudes towards legislation and court rulings can be likened as follows, from the novel The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
"Allright," Curtain shouted back. "If you are the police, where are your badges? Let's see them."
"Badges, to god-damned hell with badges! We have no badges. In fact, we don't need badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges, you god-damned cabrón and ching' tu madre! Come out from that ****-hole of yours. I have to speak to you."

if you have intellectual member in a society, democracy is the best. the less educated the public is, the more authoritaqrian the govenrment will need to be.
certain issues should be dealth harshly with and some things should be given complete freedom.
Hope i helped

democracy was supposed to go hand in hand with an informed and involved public, but we're just too darn big for that, really. Ahh so much easier to let the good 'ol TV tell us what's happening.

It is hard to tell because Democracy is still in it's infancy. The greatest civilization in the world was China and it's Emperor dynasty lasted thousands of years. So who can say Democracy is the only government that should be tolerated. The ancient Greeks gave it up because they found it was too stringent for their purposes. For more information on your question you should probably post the question on the Library of Congress' website at: loc.gov.

Well, what exactly would you suggest?
It is our personal responsibility to be informed. Yes, there are many who don't pay any attention to what is happening in our world, but it is our freedom to do whatever we please as far as that is concerned.
It may not be perfect but any other way, and we wouldn't be a free nation.
