I own a 95 honda prelude. I've been having overheating problems for quite a while, but no mechanic seems to be able to fix it, though that doesn't stop them from charging me, of course. Recently it has been okay after some major work, but in the last couple of days I've noticed coolant has stopped being put through the radiator- the coolant resivor is still full, when normally it uses it up quickly. I checked the lines to the radiator and from radiator to the engine, and they aren't clogged. What gives? Would getting my oil changed in the meantime help keep the engine cooler, also? I know there's still a major heat problem but this thing with not using the coolant is new.

Bad water pump.
or maybe water pump gasket. Try a full coolant flush.

A properly operating cooling system should not "use up coolant" once it is fixed and filled to specs it should not need any additional fluid if your reservoir is full and the car is not running hot that means its doing it job "cooling the engine" leave it be! If your car is running hot it is more then likely a bad thermostat or water pump.

The overflow tank is not supposed to empty quickly. It sounds like after the last major repair they fixed the problem and it's no longer losing coolant. The overflow tank should be at the hot line when hot, and at the cold line when cold. What does your temperate gage say?

You might have a clogged radiator or a bad thermostat. When your engine get hot put your hand in the center of your radiator and if its cool or cold its probably clogged. But put a new thermostat in it first its cheep.(please make sure your fan is disconnected so it won't turn on an hurt you)Let me know how you make out.

you could have a blocked radiator. getting oil changed would keep engine cooler. Heavier weight oil will pull heat off the motor slightly.

Colant should keep a steady level, and not be used up. Check thermostat, Check fan operation when hot. (Is it on?) Check for timing of engine. Check for vaccum leaks. Check the raditor cap for proper psi rating and operation. (It is important).
Have a fun day.
