I've had this problem my self a few times. What I do is this, I switch of my computer at the mains outlet then wait a minute ans switch on the mains again and re-boot my computer. when it comes on again, It will come on then try Disc Cleanup, then De-fragment the hard drive. If you have Ashampoo WinOptmizer. run this program as It cleans up anything that that Disc Cleanup may have missed. If you don't have Ashampoo WinOptimizer then cheak out the Ashampoo Web Site. And down load it, (I think they still have it as a free download). If this doe's not work then try System Restore.

Press ctrl+alt+del(not the backspace button) and click processes, then click where it says CPU and check which processes are using the most of your computers processor(CPU) (Ignore System Idle Process and System), if there is a odd looking process then you can right click it and end task, if it doesn't speed up your computer you can click where it says Mem Usage and the processes taking up the most memory are slowing your computer down, but you might need some of them so make sure you don't know what they are and aren't something like svchost, after this go to the start menu and click run, type msconfig in the box and press enter, then click startup and you can see all the processes and programs that will start to run when your computer is turned on, untick the boxes you dont want to start with your computer (you don't really need anything but security there), the processes you untickwon't be closed when you click apply but they won't start when you restart your computer, it'll ask you if you want to restart your computer..you're computer will only be faster if you restart. Go to Internet Explorer and click the Tools toolbar, then click Internet Options and then click Delete Cookies then click Delete Files (files you don't need anymore). Next go to Run(again) and type control then press enter, click Performance and Maintenance(if it's there, if not skip), then click System, click the Advanced tab, then click performance settings and then go to advanced and click the change button at the bottom, select C:\ and check the Custom Size circle box, then for lowest and highest put at least 1000(as long as you have 1gB memory on the C:\ drive free).

I had a problem similar to this. My computer froze up and started making noises like an aerosol can rattling around. It turns out it was the hardrive dying. You might investigate whether your hardrive is going bad.

your pc has a serious problem it needs help if by sounding like a digital watch you mean it beeps this is error or fault warning. or you could just be asking to much of your pc and it needs time to sort it self. **** down any progs that you dont use in . run/msconfig/startup
untick every box except for antivirus/firewall/internet and see if this improves your pc
if not and prob;em persists perhaps its time to think of a new one.
good luck

spyware and adware can do this to a computer too. Get a good checker/cleaner for those and run them regularly to keep the bad ware at bay.
