As a professional writer, my suggestion is to follow your passion. Choosing a topic that interests you about will naturally result in a brilliant product. Consider what fascinates you. Be specific. Make it personal. Make it your own. And don't try to choose based upon someone else's idea of what is a "correct" topic. Look inside. If the Middle East war ignites your passion, by all means, write about that. But if your deeper interest is in another realm, the research necessary to thoroughly address the topic will be less drudgery... and may, in fact, further ignite your interest. Writing a research paper may seem overwhelming, however, choosing a topic of true interest makes it a fascinating quest. Oddly, I once wrote a thesis on the effects of stress on police officers. Other classmates were writing on politics, the economy, Soviet relations and other "relevent" issues. I wrote from the heart on a topic near and dear. The end result, I enjoyed my research and that interest created an excellent product. Simply put, my heart was in it. Follow yours. Hey, if bongo drums put a spark in your eye...go for it! There's a lot about them not many folks know! Enjoy and make it fun!

collage? Do you mean college? Because they mean two totally different things. And I'm going to assume that comp. means composition and not computer even though I've written papers for computer classes.

How about something related to your major. For instances, I'm a language major so I might write a paper about the effects of No Child Left Behind on funds for ESL, Bilingual and foreign language programs. Or maybe Technological advancements that aid in the teaching of the above subjects.

Sticking to your major is always good.
