I dislike them. Especially when they are flattering someone other than me. They are useful on occasion if they are flattering me.

I dislike them too. When I compliment someone it's because I mean it not because I'm sucking up! =p

I loathe suck-ups. Half of the time they are to busy sucking up to even do their work, and the other half of the time they are wedged so far up the boss's a-s-s, that all you can see is their feet dangling out.
The only reason they have to suck-up is because they don't have a frickin' clue what's really going on, so they figure if they kiss enough a-s-s, no one will notice.

I've long since retired from working with co-workers out of my home, but yes, they are a disgusting breed. However, Clinton seemed to enjoy Monica's sucking ability.

To answer your second question: their perception is that it's easier to suck up than work. I don't see it that way, after all, some of the people you have to suck up to........... euwww!

I cannot stand suck up's! They give me the absolute hebe jeebies. Especially when it's really obvious. I agree, just do what needs to be done without the fake loyalty.
