It's almost all fictional. The Mohicans are not a real Indian tribe. The author got Mohican confused with the real Mohegan tribe.
Their decline was the result of small pox and other diseases brought by the colonists.
There are currently 1,000 members living in Connecticut.

yes, there are some historical facts, its kind of like the movie 'Titanic" yes the ship sank but there were some artistic leeway within the film
