Naturally this particular Ivory is Legal because it is prior to the l989 Ban on ivory.

Or - in the alternative - what would you think this particular ring would be worth?

Why should trading in mammoth ivory be illegal? It is hardly as if selling it means that there is an increased risk that mammoths will become extinct!

Like all goods, this ring will be worth different amounts to different people. Personally, I hate modern art, so I wouldn't pay 5c for it, unless I I could cut it up and use the pieces as a handerchief. However, other people really like modern art and are willing to pay a heap for it. It all depends on supply and demand.

Just because it is old doesn't make it valuable. It is often easy to find fossils in pieces of coal or rock in some places. Often, in these places, these fossils are sold in shops for a few cents each, even though they are old. The reason is that there are very few serious fossil collectors and therefore, they are only interested in the very best specimens.

To me, the ring is worth almost nothing. To a collector of mammoth rings, it would be wiorth a lot. Also remember that worth is quite different from price.

Nothing. I wouldn't buy it. First, how can you guarantee that it wasn't gotten by poachers claiming it's 10,000 years old when really the poor elephant got shot yesterday? Secondly, how can you guarantee that it wasn't looted from a site of scientific importance? Are you going to have a staff of archaeologists and paleozoologists?

Depends on the ring. Just because it is Mammoth ivory, doesn't make it valuable or desirable. You can buy Mammoth ivory from knife-maker's supply companies, and carve one yourself.

I'd rather see the ivory kept in a museum.

I'd pay not a penny, but it's prob. worth a lot, if it was PROVEN to be soooo old.
