It's a greater problem the covetousness we all seen to have about what other people have gained.
People shall get paid what the market for their services are... untasteful to some perhaps, but no one has a right to say what you are paid other than your employer.
If you wish they NOT get paid, then just convince people to stop going to events, schools to stop sports programs, etc. You have little idea how much other areas of endeavor are making, should rich game designers not be paid, Hollywood seems filled with rich, petulant people not deserving the recognition they get... why single out one industry?
If someone on an assembly line were passionate about his job, would or should he be paid less than someone who does not care?

Marion Jones - She was a American sprinter who won 5 medals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 but after admitting that she had used steroids after lying about it, she was arrested and stripped of all her medals. Ben Johnson - The two-time 100m world record holder in the 1980's. He won three Olympic medals, one gold and two bronze. He lost the gold and both of his world records after being disqualified for doping. Mark McGwire - A MLB player for the Oakland Athletics and the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1998 he broke the single-season home run record with 70 home runs. It was later broken by Barry Bonds, who hit 73. Both are suspected and being investigated of steriod use. Sorry I didn't give more examples. Hope that helps!

CHARLIE FINLEY was rite when he said the free agent would ruin sports. It is now almost out of reach for the average Joe to see a game in person, besides taking his family.Look at the Yankees, they go out and out bid for whoever they want to fill a spot.In turn tickets, concessions and parking increase. The fan is the loser. When arbitration time ,the player always wins with a sizable increase. But also remember how greedy the owners are also.Pay NO taxes on concessions or parking ,all free money.Look at what Houston paid for Clemmons and lost last year.

You could discuss how they also get a lot of perks and extras that "regular" people do not get. For example, how they get paid so much to do commercials or sell their own line of athletic shoes. Also, they work less than most. Football players only play 16 games a season, I am not disputing that they don't train hard or get tired, but they have a shorter season. However, they do train all year.

Athletes only work part of the year, but get paid for the whole year.
Athletes get paid for playing games that most people play just for fun.
Athletes' high salaries mislead kids into thinking they have a future in sports, thus deemphasizing academics.

Another thing you might want to look at is the history of how they were UNDERPAID, even as late as the 1970's. A lot of the greed now is caused by labor strikes by nearly every professional sports league during the 1980's as a backlash to that fact.

I would make the point that a professional athelete, who's making millions of dollars a year makes more than the president, who has a salary of $400,000 a year with added benefits. Whether you like G.B. or not, he's the president of the country. Shouldn't he be making more than some athlete?!

If athletes were really passionate about the game then they would do it for very little money.
