You have to be specific about the society you are asking about and exactly what you define as "power". I would not say, for instance, that in North America men hold more power just because the president is a male and so are most of the military and police.
In the rural muslim middle east I would say the men hold more power (decision making), heck in some countries women are little better than cattle.
However, in modern western society you average individual female has WAY more power (i.e. rights and previleges) than the male.

It depends a lot on what you mean by power. Political and economical power is still mostly held by the men, while women tend to have more 'social' power. And who has more 'sexual power' is a bit controversial...
In general I'd say men have more of the obvious forms of power and women have more of the subtle forms, but overall brute force tends to overshadow things making it seem like men have more.
(And this is strictly in the western/first-world society, it gets different if we start looking elsewhere.)

heterosexual, white, christian men have the most power. The ideas of "image maker" and "moral center" and all that for women go back decades into trying to rationalize oppression.

Come on, that’s easy to see…women have the greatest power. Of course, if you ask them they’ll say that men do. But all you have to do is look at court cases all throughout the country at any given day to realize that women more power.
Women have and keep building a legal system that benefits their cause. Look at child custody cases. Women win most of those cases and when a man wins, they call it “sexism.” Of course, if the woman wins, then it means that the judge made the right decision. Wink!
I’ve talked to guys that pay child support and I’ve been told that they are treated like criminals. Just talk to any guy that pays child support and that have gone through the courts and they’ll tell you some real life horror stories.
Look at spouse abuse cases. I read long time ago about a research that stated that man are more likely to be physical abused by women than the other way around. At least that’s what the study concluded. The problem is that in the vast majority of cases men do not report the incident due to embarrassment.
I was with a girl once who in a couple of occasions punched me and scratched me. I went to the police station and made the report but nothing was done by the cops after taking the report. I’d bet you that if it had been the other way around, I would had spent the next few nights in jail.
One of my co-workers went thought a similar experience. One day him and his wife were arguing and when he tried to leave the house to go cool off, she got in his way and started kicking, punching and starching him. He pushed her off of him and she called the cops. The cops arrested him and confiscated all his hunting rifles and took him to jail. Yeah, that’s right, they took him and not her. Evn though he had scratches.
The study that I read and well as another two studies that I’ve read, showed that most women who get battered by their partners, provoked the incident. Of course, women don’t want to amid that because it would hurt them in court. It’s better for them to go to court and play the victims. It appears that any time a woman cries in court, everybody buys their stories.
Look at murders, women are a whole lot more likely to walk or to get much leaner sentences than men when they kill their partners. All women have to do is claim that the guy was abusive to her and do a little crying in court to get off the hook.
When women commit other type of homicides, they are still more likely to get leaner sentences. Look at the case a few years back in which a woman killed her children because she claimed to have postpartum depression. She literally got a slap on the wrist by the judge. I remember women talking about it and saying that they understood the “poor” women. Some feminist groups jump to give her support.
About a year later, in a similar situation, a man killed his kids because he was depressed because he had lost his job and didn’t have money to pay bills and support his family. The judge threw the book at the poor guy and I remember women talking about what a monster he was.
Education is another area that women are redesigning to serve their cause. More women than men and enrolling in colleges. About 55% to 60% of students in colleges across the country are females. In K-12th, schools are switching to a female based education system. Women used to claim that schools thought in ways that were designed to fit the way in which boys learn, which is different then girls. I think that at one point in history, that was true, but now, it’s the other way around. For example, boys can not be boys anymore. It’s estimated that about 55% of boys attending K-12 schools are taking some type of psychotic drug. It appears that now days a boy who’s a bit too aggressive and/or who likes to run and play a bit too much, things that were associated with a boy just “being a boy”, it’s now improper under the new women ruled world. These boys are given drugs to “help” them with their AD or ADHD “disorders.” Now days, boys have to act more like girls in order to meet the new behavioral expectations that are now expected of them. I often wonder how many of the organizations and groups that have been established to help young girls stay in school and to “improve” school curriculums to help girls, are worrying about all the statistics that are showing that boys are falling behind? Not many…if any at all!
I do think that women have more power than men even in the work force. If a male supervisor overlooks women when it comes to ascending people up the ladder, then they are accused him of being sexists and sue to company for discrimination.
I think that it’s wonderful that women are moving ahead in life, but it should not come at the cost of boys falling behind. I am for equality in ever sense of the world. I think that men and women should be equals in every respect. It’s wrong for either sex to have more power over the other in any part of society. It’s not only wrong, but I think that it’s dangerous for the well being and stabilization of the world.
I could go on and on but this answer has already gotten too long. So I better end it now. Good luck!

Good on 'em I say!
Just as long as they don't start being 'victems'... that's when it starts to get annoying.
