Hi, I am a citizen of an english speaking country and I am currently in a foreign french-speaking country as an English Assistant in the equivalent to a middle school. I am only 22. My job is to basically serve as a dictionary and pronunciation guide between the two languages (I am at an advanced french level.) I have only had the french-speaking students by myself a couple of times and never bigger than 15 but I am still having trouble getting some of them, especially the less motivated students, to stay quiet and pay attention; through observing other english classes i've seen that some are absolutely silent and obidient, and others are rowdy, it seems to depend on the teacher/the teacher's methods. What would be good methods to keep these middle-school age students obedient and quiet enough to learn my language? Considering they use it all the time in slang and in slogans I would think that they would have interest...

I like some of the other suggestions. Having little games and giving candy as prizes can help because the kids will try to have more positive attention towards winning.
Call the parents if there are a couple that you can pinpoint and explain the problem.
I have 3 incessant talkers. I have called the parents and they continue to be challenging. Today I started class and handed them a blank detention slip. They asked about it. I explained that I will have them fill it out in sections when they misbehave. If they leave class with my signature then they would have to serve a detention. Once I had them write their names on the slip... I had no more problems for the rest of the day. They understood that I was serious.

command their respect in the way you act around them. Let them see who is the boss but do it in a respectful way so that they will give you back the respect.
Hey teaching is a very difficult job some parents make it even harder by not teaching their children basic principles of behaviour. I don't think that middle school students should be drilled by teachers on how to behave in a classroom setting.
Good Luck!!!

a couple of suggestions from a recently retired teacher. Middle school is the toughest age. But first let us look at your personality. Kids have an innate sense when a person is "weak" in any given situation, especially middle schoolers. I am a very strong person, and subbed in middle school at age 50, and I found as long as I didn't act like their parents, whom they don't' often like at that age, as long as I joked a bit and was at the same time strict. My discipline for a kid kicking his neighbor under the table was done jokingly, but they knew I meant business. I made him come up front like we were going to do something fun, and then I bent down and tied his shoes laces from both shoes together very tight. He laughed and hopped back to his place. But I knew he was a jokester and could handle it, but I became known as strict but extremely fun sub. I've had middle schoolers roll down windows in town with their mom and call out "hi Mrs. B" I think that was one of the most honorable moments of my life, to be accepted by a middle schooler when I was a sub. It is difficult, are you cut out for it. ?

I'm not sure if i get the whole situation, but try playing games. Make class fun. from 4-8 grade i had to take spanish and we had a teacher who made us do book work all day. I got to high school and i got a teacher that made class fun and actually connected with us. When i entered my spanish class the first day of spanish (in 9th grade) i was dreading taking spanish again. Make it fun and educational. Make weird ways to memorise words. like cercas, lejos which means near, far and if you sing it kids can memorise it by the song from Titanic. Be fun and connect.

Your students are testing you. I know from experience, don't let them get away with anything and right now. Once you have lost them, they won't ever listen to you again, and neither will their classmates. As you lead teacher for tips and explain the situation. Special techniques and a stern hand are definately needed. Don't feel guilty for pulling rank.

The word to dealing with children is CONSISTANT. If you tell them you will do something you must follow through or you have lost their respect. Everytime you tell them to be quiet and they won't, make them write off 10 times I WILL BE QUIET IN CLASS. If they keep it up double it. After a while they'll get the message.

If they get answers right the you should give them candy, that might help. Sometimes they want to be roudy just to get the attentoin of others and just show off too much. Im a middle schooler and thats what a lot of kids try to do to substututes. So try not to let the kids show off too much. THEY LIKE THE ATTENTION
