My girlfriends computer when it starts up says BIOS Check Sum Error and then asks to insert a disk. I do not have the disk, and we have to insert an old startup disk from another computer and switch the thing on and off till it gets something it can use. I need to know how to fix the BIOS or whatever is wrong with the contraption. I do know a thing or two about computers, so any instructions would be great. The computer is a HP Pavilion a1510n and runs Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Any sugestions or instructions will be a great help. Thanks.

From what you say, it appears to be either a BIOS problem, or a "corrupt" boot sector on the HD.

Go to BIOS setup screens and use "default" settings. Also, set it to RESET the CMOS (if it permits this, some do not). Save and reboot.

If that doesn't work suggest you MANUALLY reset the CMOS. (manual or HP website should tell you how.)
While you are at it you should check the system battery, usually a round lithium cell. It shouldn't be dead, but may be. (They usually last for years!)

If it STILL doesn't work you may need to "Flash" the BIOS with a new BIOS OS usually available from HP or the BIOS manufacturer, along with instructions; as a download. (it may have been corrupted by a stray magnetic field from house wiring, TV, etc.)

IF STILL not working, you may have to try the Recovery disk. I mention this last as it will reset the computer to the way it came from the factory, and you have a 95% chance of losing EVERYTHING you have added (software and/or files) since purchase, and have to reload all your add-ons and files from your "backups." (Recovery disk should be available from HP or Microsoft if you don't have one!!)
You HAVE been making EXTERNAL backups haven't you?
