I really think it depends on what people have experienced in their lives, but mostly it is psycological. Most people think of "white sand" as cool and clean. White is pure... and when people think of "black sand", they think of dirty.

Personally, I find dark sand beaches to be nicer to my eyes, and warmer. Nothing is better than the black stone beaches of the Black Sea. mmm...

Only SOME people believe that. Most beaches have some beauty...it's how much the sand hurts your feet that should be the measurement! :-)

Good question Farai.

I've never understood it myself, I prefer a shingle beach or sometimes even a rocky one with a nice cosy bed of dried seaweed.

The sandy ones look good in your photos and are great for kids, but the reality is the sand gets everywhere, sticks to your towel, wrecks your camera and ipod, and cheeses off the taxi or bus driver on the way home when you drop sand all over the seats. And then when you get back to your apartment you end up with sand in your bed, on the floor and washing around in the shower room.

Sandy beaches.................no thanks.

For me, black sand beaches always make me feel like it's going to rain from the ground up and, even worse, it gives me the impression that it retains all the heat from the sun, like wearing a black tshirt on a hot day.

Have you seen the black beaches in Hawaii? They are beautiful and all the brown ones look beautiful. Never met a beach I didn't like. What isn't beautiful are the old men and women wearing thongs.
