U2 pilot, Francis Gary Powers shot down while making a high altitude spying mission for the CIA.
Before this, the US had NEVER publicly acknowleddged that they did ANY kind of spying on the Soviets. Of course, everyone knew that we all spied on each other.
The American intelligence community thought that there would be absolutely no chance that one of our U2 spy planes could be detected, much less, shot down. But a Soviet surface to air missle did just that, and the plane was hit and Powers had to bail out. He was captured, tried and jailed.
The US managed to have him released, in exchaned for an important Soviet spy. It was a publicly embarrasing time for the US, because it forced president Eisenhower to publicly acknowlege the spy plane program, and offer an apology to the soviets.

The Iran-Contra affair. This was a very big deal in the 80s. It also ties into our current situation in Iraq. If you research this topic, you will see how America was not always such an enemby of Saddam Hussein, but actually teamed up with him vs. Iran.

Do a little something more off the beaten path. Try researching the parallel development in Soviet and US weapons systems. For example you can research the way US and Soviet submarines (both attact and missle) were constantly changing to counter each others abilities.
