Well, first determine your body type and then get on the Internet and do a search for the best clothing styles to wear for your body type. Then begin to take notice of what you like. Tailored, goth, feminine, trendy, classic, etc. Take into consideration the best attire for your age and life style. No college trends for a middle-aged woman. Can you picture a granny in goth? Ha!
Aways wear what feels comfortable and looks the best on you. Don't worry to much about size if you've tried on that 6 and it's too small, then try the 8 on---always wearing what looks better.
Do a color swatch test also, to see what colors you look fabulous in. Go to a fabric store and drape a length of fabric around your shoulders to see what colors enhance the undertones in your skin and make you glow. Do this by looking into a mirror or just bring a good friend with you.

You could hire a stylist but a worthwhile one will be extremely expensive and really, if you're not a public figure it's not really worth it.
However, most upscale department stores have personal shoppers that will shop with you and help to pick out clothing, accessories, whatever it is you're looking for. If you explain to them that you're looking for a better look, they can help you no problem. Be prepared to spend, though.
If you want to do something cheaper, ask a friend with great style if they can help you improve your look. Schedule a shopping trip and get their honest opinions on what flatters your. A friend with great style can give you tips and hints, as well.
