From the book "1984". A reckless war that will likely bring about a deadly cycle of retaliation is being sold to us as the means to guarantee our safety. Meanwhile, we've been instructed to accept the permanent war as a fact of daily life. As the inevitable slaughter of innocents unfolds overseas, we are to "live our lives and hug our children."

Not true but in the book 1984, WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH is the slogan of the Party. For instance, through constant "war", the Party can keep domestic peace; when freedom is brought about, the people are enslaved to it, and the ignorance of the people is the strength of the Party. If (like Winston) anybody becomes too smart, they are whisked away for fear of rebellion. Through their constant repetition, the terms become meaningless, and the slogans become axiomatic. This type of misuse of language, and the deliberate self-deception with which the citizens are encouraged to accept it, is called doublethink.

One essential consequence of doublethink is that the Party can rewrite history with impunity, for "The Party is never wrong."
In 1984, George Orwell warns of the terrifying dangers that man may create for himself in his quest for a utopian society. It warns that people might believe that everyone must become slaves to the government in order to have an orderly society, but at the expense of the freedom of the people

War is not peace. The words have entirely incompatible meanings. If we are to ever establish what words mean, we must give some final credence to dictionaries, which are compiled by scholars much more familiar with the meanings of words than average people like you and I.

On a related note: Always take care about the meaning of words. Without words having definite meanings, we cannot reason any help from anything we call "God". The favor of God deeply depends on our sedulous defense of the idea that words do indeed have meanings.

And the foundation of atheism ultimately rests on a claim that words have no meaning.

You have to go to a book written in 1949 to make a point that is of little consequence to life now, then or in 1984. War is not peace, but it can lead to peace. When tyrants destroy and reduce their people to slaves war may become necessary. Not rocket science here.

Without war, we wouldn't know peace and vice-versa.
It sometimes also requires war to have peace. When good men negotiate with evil men, evil men win. Why? because they lie and so ignore every promise or treaty they sign. That is why when good and evil clash one or the other will prevail and the other be defeated. Either good prevails or evil will, there is no balance.

You all are missing the point. The Bush administrations' rhetoric is what we were warned about in the book "1984". Its sad that ignorance causes people to commit huge errors, that would have been known to be huge errors before they committed them, if they weren't so ignorant.

that doesn't apply in this country. Put war is peace can be applied to NAZI Germany or Tojo Japan where even though everything sucks your more focused on fighting an enemy. the NAzi government focused the peoples attention on hating jews and people considered sub human.

So this is TRUE (if your a dictator in a crappy country)

definately false because the consequences that come with it afta the war are far more greater that a country without war,it brings about homeless peoples, enormous death tolls, massive destruction, hunger, massive costs to the countries affected and a lot of socio-economic essues
