Is it possible to run dual monitors on a laptop that has a fairly good VGA card?

I have an intel 256 mb onboard VGA card. Im able to run a monitor to extend the desktop onto another monitor but i want to be able to close the lid to my laptop and have two monitors. I try to enable the second monitor but it doesnt show up as a monitor extended from my desktop? What do i do, I tryed advanced settings and that doesnt work. Im using a y splitter could this be the problem, can you not run duals on a laptop?

Ive heard you need 2 seperate VGA cards to run dual monitors, or does anyone now of a good monitor hub kind of like a switch but it allows you to run more than one monitor, got the link for me?

Yes, you can. You must disable the auto shut down when the laptop is closed. Check setting in control panel.

If you want to have both moniters show the same thing (not an extended desktop) you can buy a VGA splitter. To use an extended desktop you need digital outs.

If you have a desktop computer and you want multiple monitors, your best bet is to buy an external monitor and a second video adapter that supports multiple monitors. Alternatively, you can upgrade your current video adapter with an adapter that can connect directly to multiple monitors. You can find such video adapters for less than $200 at most electronics stores—just make sure that it's compatible with your computer and has connectors that match the monitors you plan to use.

If you're a laptop user, you don't have the option of adding another video adapter, but your laptop might support using Dualview with an external monitor and the laptop's built-in display. If it does support DualviewL plug a monitor into the external VGA port of your laptop and turn on the Dualview feature of Windows XP. To turn on Dualview, follow these steps:

In the DisplayProperties dialog box, click the Settings tab.

Click the Display list and select your external monitor. If you do not see multiple monitors listed, your computer hardware may not support Dualview. You can still use MaxiVista to configure a second computer as an additional display, however.

You can't run 2 monitors off of one VGA output connector. Your laptop can do dual monitor just fine, but ONE of those is going to have to be the LCD display built-in.
You can get a splitter that will let you send the one connector's signal to 2 monitors, but they will both have to show the SAME THING -- in other words, they can't be an extended desktop. The VGA connector only has signals for one output, it can't supply multiple monitors at different resolutions and with different contents.
