Read Ann Coulter's book "Treason" There's a lot of her patented vitriol in there, but an awful lot of interesting facts too. McCarthy was politically tone deaf, but he was right about there being Communists in the U.S. Government.

Many people today confuse McCarthy with the House Un-American Activities Committee. McCarthy was a SENATOR, and never part of that committee.

He got powerful because everyone was afraid of the communists. He was the leader of a committee and they brought people (Mostly from Hollywood) in and charged them with being commies. If they in turn reported another star as a commie, They would be let go and the other star would be called in. They ruined many careers as these people could not work again for many years. Finally one newsman Edward R Murrow called him a "Drunk Senator who was also Drunk with power" That ended it. You can rent the Movie "Goodnight and Goodluck" It is Murrows story.

It's basically the same thing the republicans are doing now: CONTROL THROUGH FEAR.
Read about and tell me you can't draw parallels.
