This is a homework question for my sis, and my family is confused on it, can someone answer?

How the number of chromosomes in a cell produced by meiosis differs from that of a cell from the same organism produced by mitosis?

Mitosis takes a cell with chromosome number of 2n and replicates it into 2 daughter cells each having 2n chromosomes.
Think of it as photocopying the cell.

Meiosis takes a cell with chromosome number of 2n and divides it into 4 gametes each with "n" for the chromosome count.

Mitosis produces two cells with the exact number of chromosomes as the original cell, the chromosomes are duplicated in the beginning of mitosis.
Meiosis produces four cells with half the genetical information of the original cell. A diploid organism has 2 sets of every chromosome, and during meiosis one of this sets is lost for every chromosome.

well meiosis is sexual reproduction and you end up with 4 cells because theres meiosis 1 and 2. in meiosis, you end up with half the amount of chromosomes u start out with whereas mitosis u have the same amount cuz its normal cell reproduction

Meiosis is how gametes are produced. Therefore, since the joining of 2 gametes makes 1 organism, you would want only half the required number of chromosomes in each of the meotic daughter cells.
