The temperature method *confirms* ovulation has *already* occurred. By the time your temp goes up you have already missed your fertile window. But, if you have very regular cycles you can use the information collected over a few cycles to predict when you generally ovulate.
Signs of impending ovulation are:
Cervix is high, soft and open
Cervical fluid is clear, very stretchy, somewhat like egg-whites
You may also have signs that are individual to you, such as sore breasts, ovulation pains, etc.

Test your vaginal mucus. Check it every day, when you can put it between your thumb and forefinger, stretch it out and it stays put, quite thick, you are ovulating.
I got pregnant first time trying using this method.
Or you can buy an oluation kit, but you only get 7 sticks to test, so its a bit hit and miss.
You can also try it by taking your temperature everyday, but I foudn this useless, my temp varied too much to tell what was happening.

Personally, I always know.. about midcycle I'll get mild, period-like symptoms.. some cramping, moodiness, and headaches.. but like I said, they are usually quite mild.
Also some women will notice a slippery discharge this time of the month, that's your body telling you to go for it, you're fertile!

When you ovulate you're mucous membrane changes...aside from that you can use your calendar to estimate your ovulation time..or you could purchase and ovulation kit from your local grocer.

My wife used the temperature chart before and she swore by it. We are using it again.
There's a great book that can help: Taking Charge of Your Fertility.
If you've been trying for a shortwhile and haven't conceived yet, it is certainly worth looking into. It has put her at ease on several issues regarding her/our fertility.
