I think that it should for the people who do not believe in God or whatever it may be. In any wedding ceremony you can ask them to leave out things you don't agree with. Try a judge or like here where I live, gay marrige is not legal but my mom and her gf/wife were "married" by the unitilitarian church...

The marriage ceremony can be tailored to each couples desire. It can be a civil ceremony conducted by a judge in chambers, a justice of the peace, or a religious ceremony of whatever denomination the couple chooses. Many couples choose to be married by Elvis inpersonators in Las Vegas. The license bought from the county court is the legal contract that can only be broken by another court procedure-divorce. It can be signed by any of the above named people who can legally perform the ceremony. So consider that when the ceremony is performed and the parties involved-Bride,Groom, Witnesses, and the officiate who performed the ceremony-sign the license, it is a legal contract.

the thing is, marriage has a religious root, since it was designed so 2 people could become as one. also, people like he ceremonial aspect of it. usually when you only do civil its pretty much like a business transaction so theres no "magic". divorce doesnt happen because of how you get married. it happens because peolple dont have a sense of commitment anymore and want to have butterflies in the stomach all the time, not realizing his stage in the relationship goes away, sooner or later. so when people start caring more about the other rather than about themselves in the relationship, well continue to have divorces. BOTH people have to care more about the other person, thats thw aspect of giving and how things work better. but thsats not the way of this society anymore, its not a realistic expectation. people need to be sure they want to spend the rest of their life with the other. it involves maqturity.

A very valid question. You are given a choice of being married in a church which may involve a lot of red tape, or in a civil ceremony. The bottom line is either way the divorce rate is 50%.

alright first im gonna say this like my mommah said -
if your gonna ban gay marriages you need to ban divorce-
second- i dont think all religions have the same ceremony- im sure all of them are blessed in some manner but not necessarily lthe same as above
third-i agree and disagree- because you cant just go to the preacher and get married you have to do all these other things through the government, a marriage license??? blood test - all that - you need a blood test to get married but not to have kids- huh - makes no sense - so i wish the government would mind the affairs of their own lives instead of those of mine and others, the thing about removing religion is it would be like any other written contract, to some people their marriage would not be so sacred, i do think this should be an option for those who do not have a specific god but do not deny god, i myself want to be married by a religious person- (dont follow any religion specifically but live morally) - but not sure how to go about it, so to have someone say this ceremony be blessed by the one above - or something like that, i would enjoy -
not sure if i really answered you question - and no im not gay either -
to the one that said what would keep me from cheating on my wife? i hope your heart and soul would, not something thats written down on paper - i mean dayumn- w t f is the point- im not married to my man but ill never cheat on him because i love him -

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I thought marriage WAS a civil contract. My marriage has nothing to do with god, it's a legal thing between me and my husband. Our ceremony was not in church, and was completely non-religious. I think, in this day and age, it's up to the individuals to treat is as a "god" thing or a secular contract.

I'm not gonna bash you. I don't think any religion is involved if you get married by a justice of the peace. But most people want a civil and religious ceremony. Most people are christian.

What??? Gays getting married?! But that would mean that my marriage would be totally worthless! And then what would keep me from cheating on my wife, hmmm? And my kids would start doing drugs. Pretty soon, the streets are crawling with zombies. Gay, married zombies.
Marriage must kept religious and must be protected from... uh... more... marriage.
God bless America.
