I don't like to use the ones that ask for personal banking account info either. Numbers off the bottom of your checks and that kind of thing. I've even seen a few that ask for passwords and pin numbers !!!

Asking for the codes on the back is generally a good thing. This helps to validate the card for your safety. If your card number simply appeared on a list, without the bank's code would offer some doubt. With that code, the card is probably in the person's hands.

Asking for a password or pin number on that card would be BOGUS.

I recommend sticking with companies that show their address and telephone number shown at the website. You can verify these in other directories, as well as http://www.bbb.org and other organizations that can verify that a company is for real.

Keeping your computer free of viruses and spyware is important. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

Good luck

A legit company is likely to use a legit credit card processor who cares about customer safety and asks for the 3 digit code on the back of a credit card. Same goes for routing number and checking account information.

A shady company is likely to use a shady credit card processor who doesn't care too much about customer safety. If such a company asks for passwords and pin numbers - they are definitely NOT legitimate companies and you need to check your system for virii and spyware.

Stick with legitimate companies. Even if an illegitmate company throws up a legitimate looking website - check for spelling errors, graphics inconsistencies and other subtle clues that point to a fraud.

I believe it's just an additional safety feature. Some of the companies that give the cards work with online services and allow/use the security code as an extra measure. I think it also helps speed up the check-out process. Don't quote me on that. :)

It is more secure, someone can take a picture of your credit card but they tont be able to use your card if they dont have the numbers on the back
