If you rent a portable pool for either home or hospital birth, it usually costs about $375, which includes the rental fee, shipping both ways, and all the extras that you might need. Some insurance companies do reimburse for the expense of the pool rental. If the hospital has permanent birth pool equipment, there is not really even any need to let your insurance company know that you have had a waterbirth. Just in case they may object to the process, it is always safe to inform the insurance company that the baby was born vaginally. It really doesn't matter if the baby was born in the bath or on the bed - it is still a vaginal birth.

Some insurance companies will cover it, usually only if the birth is attended my a certified midwife. In my area (Orange County, CA), the cost for a birth center, including prenatal care is about $3,000. Renting the pool is extra if you don't want to use thier lovely jacuzzi bathubs. When I had my daughter, I was covered by emergency MediCal through the state. We had health insurance, and requested the maternity rider, buy my agent did not include it in the policy, so we were sort of screwed. MediCal would have covered the birth center, but I don't think they covered the pool rental. I would up with a (natural) hospital birth, becasue my husband was hugely uncomfortable with the birth center concept and he and the midwife did not get along (he asked too many questions about potential complications and the distance to the nearest hospital, apparently).

Depends on where you plan to give birth.
Are you looking at home, birth center or hospital?
ETA:
GoPackGo obviously knows nothing about waterbirth or how the tubs or cleaned or the special liners that are used in rental tubs, etc. etc. I've had two AMAZING and SAFE waterbirths.

Water births are a bad idea. Whales and dolphins are born in the water not humans. Do a lab culture and see what grows from the drain on the tub. I've seen the results from these cultures and you really don't want your baby exposed to any of the infectious things that could be hiding. Just a thought....
