Yep, they weigh, measure, give him/her a bath, then wrap him/her up all pretty and give it back to you.

Just for a short time...if you feel apprehensive tell them, they can do just about everything while you watch and see. They have to get the "apgar" score within the first minute and again at 5 minutes old. They wash the baby, weigh the baby, clothe and diaper the baby, etc. The apgar checks the health and responsiveness of your little one. Again, let your concerns be known and the hospital will most likely cater to your wishes. No where in the world will you find more compassionate people than neonatal nurses!

After birth they will show you what you had, then they have to
clean the baby up, dress him/her, and make sure all the yuk
is out of their mouth. Weigh them, check their size everything
needs to be done so it can be documented. Then if the baby
is doing fine you are able to keep your baby with you all day. Some
hospitals prefer for them to sleep in the nursery. I prefer for the
baby to sleep in the same room. And if the mother was using drugs they can tell when the water bag pops. Or the babyis having with draws. Then the baby is taken away by CPS.

It depends sometimes too on how you give birth. I had 2 C-sections, and they took both of my kids away both times. I saw them for about 5 minutes and then they rushed them to the NICU because of keeping them warm (and the bathing, etc that everyone else mentioned). I got to hold my babies about an hour and a half after my surgery because I was considered to be in "recovery".

only if
1) they need medical attention
2) if you tell them they can (for test and stuff)
3) if you ask them to

Most hospitals these days do the measuring, and bath right there in the room, if not you can go with them, for anything. Even procedures. They will not, can not take your baby with out consent, (unless an emergancy). You can even tell then ahead of time that your baby will not leave your side, they have to respect your decision on this (of cource again this is assuming that the baby is healthy)

If the Mom goes to sleep, they will take him to the nursery.

I still wonder if they switched babys on me.
He was so new, I probably would not have been able to pick him out of a line up.
When I went to get him, after I over slept, the had him swinging
wildly in a swing chair wearing a very dirty diaper.
So, don't let them take him!!!!

My baby never left my side, except once with my Husband. I gave birth at a Kaiser Hospital.

It depends on the hospital. I had mine 2 at Princeton Medical Center in NJ. They took the babies from me to weigh, measure, etc., but did it all in the room - I could see the babies the whole time.

It's funny that you ask this... When I was pregnant, I was SO paranoid about what would happen when I gave birth. I think I watched too many lifetime movies... (switched at birth!) ;o)
I made my husband promise that he wouldn't leave her side. They did take her, but he went with her, as promised. She wasn't gone long and of course later, I felt silly about the whole thing.

Yes they take them to the nursery. Sometimes it's for less then an hour sometimes for a few hours. If the baby needs to go to the NICU it's probably longer then that. Good luck.

It's YOUR baby.
Insist that your baby never leave your sight.
If the baby needs to leave the room for a test or something, send Dad or Grandma along with them.
