I suggest North, Pinehurst area, or the mountains, if your work is not a factor. You can get to the Raleigh or Charlotte airport pretty fast if you want to travel out of there, rates and flights are good. If you do not work, plenty of retired golfers to play with. Lots of medical jobs in Raleigh / Cary (RTP) and very upscale for the mid-southeast.
Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, Greenville / Spartanburg is about all there is to S. C. Air travel more of a problem, although you can get to Charlotte in 1 hr. and 15 min. from Spartanburg, which is a terrific place to live, very nice town and people. Charlotte football team is really based out of Spartanburg.

South Carolina is less ugly. North Carolina, at least the Fayetteville area is dispicable. South Carolina has more of that southern charm feel to it. Kinda like Georgia has in a lot of places. North Carolina is one of the worse southeastern states period.
