what makes a good acting coach/teacher?

You didn't say in which city you live. In New York City, most acting coaches/teachers will let you audit (sit in on a class) to observe how he/she teachers and watch the students do their scenes, exercises, monologues, etc. If you have actor you think are good actors, ask them for teacher recommendations. You should visit as many acting teachers as possible. Also, call the theater department of the universities and community colleges in the city where you live and ask for acting teacher recommendations. If you are in New York City (HB Studio has always been low-cost with great teachers (retired and working actors,) former actors that worked in tv, film, theater, are teachers. I was fortunate enough to have studied with the late Geraldine Page.
