The black plague is a deadly disease that has remained without a cure
for hundreds of years. It has paralysed Europe not only by causing
tens of thousands of injuries but also in economic loss.

It originated from the fleas in rodents like squirrels, rats and mice
on the northern coast of the black sea, in the Italian trading colony.
It spread through the country-to-country trading of the Italians.

People dealt with this epidemic by creating early warning systems,
such as isolating individuals or cities from the larger population to
prevent the disease spreading. Some families were even locked up in
their own homes to avoid contamination of other families.

Individuals who were infected got sent to a special hospital, where
they usually died. The dead bodies were simply carted away and put in
mass graves known as plague pits. Archaeologists discovered these pits
during their excavations.

This changed the world by destroying over one quarter of Europe's
population! There was tens of thousands of deaths and this caused a
huge economic loss. But it did put a hold to the deadly diseases
plaging society, by introducing the first public warning systems. This
has benefited society greatly.

This appears to be about 200 words. Capitalize Black Sea in paragraph 2. In the last paragraph, change "There was" to "There were." Also spell "plaguing" correctly.

You could build each paragraph with more details to get your 400 words.

Great organization.
I agree, flesh it out with details. The god thing is There's a lot to say abotu the plague.
1- Tell about it's other names
2- Tell what physically happens to a person who catches it
3- Discuss why fleas had access to the human population

Proofread. You have misplaced commas, you're missing at least one apostrophe

Is isolating a family an early warning system or a containment system? Were they other 'early warning systems'?

You can definitely get 400 words.

Well, as everybody else said, it's just 197 words. You can put it in Microsoft Word, then go to Tools > Word Count, and it says there the number.

But you can put some more info in it and after 150 more words, it could pass as a 400 word essay. Besides, it's easy to get informations with the net:

Hope it helps you.

Under tools in Word, there is a word count function. Count the words and expand on ideas until you get 400. It's not that hard and you have some general ideas here you can expand on quite easily.

gosh, this is hardly more than an outline. get out your handbook and read the section on paragraphs. turn each of these small units into a proper paragraph.

now read section on essays. Start with thesis, end with conclusion. in other words, flesh out your first and last parts, and pay attention to the rules: thesis, body, summation, conclusion. make sure it's tight, ie. one part leads into the next part, etc. basically all you need is a good strong re-write.

You could talk about how the plague is actually a bacteria with a scientific name. You could throw the word "bubonic" in there, that's another word. You could use courier new, that's a font that takes up a lot of space.
