There are two types DSL if you're on cable and ADSL if you are on BT. The ADSL one you connect through a microfilter. I have a microfilter in my hallway. That plugs in the phone socket and the phone plugs in the microfilter. Then I have an RJ11 cable go to my home office and that plugs in a ADSL modem/router. That communicates with my desktop PC through a wireless dongle plugged in to a USB2 port and to my laptop that has wireless built in - the signal is encrypted. I pick up the 400 mbs signal from the local school too - that's encrypted too! Shame - the kids would be top of the class otherwise. Not my kids....

Forget about all the recommendations listed here, until you can answer one important question first. How is your Broadban received at your house? If it comes throught the telephone line you'll need an ADSL Router, if it comes through Cable or Satellite you'll need a DSL Router.
Then you need to decide how far from the Router will the PC/Laptop be.
Once this is decided, you can then decide on one of the recommendations listed, but ideally you should aim for either a MIMO rated Router or a Pre-N rated Router. All the manufacturers make them - though Linksys or D-Link would be a preferred supplier.

A instantaneous modem router will be a instantaneous router/modem blend and a instantaneous router would in basic terms be a router by technique of itself. in case you had extreme-speed cable information superhighway you'll want a modem suitable to a instantaneous router to get on line.

you need 1 router with built in wireless . if ur laptop dont have wireless card in then buy 1 weireles usb adapter. then from the desktop . connect up the router . and install the router drivers . when you have internet access from the desktop with the router . you then go to ur router page that is the router control panel . u can access this from the internet explorer or firefox then when ur there you need to set up a network id and security key for ur laptop . what you do is click from the router page hit on ur (WLAN) icon not the ethernet icon >>>(WLAN) then set up a network id it can be any name with numbers
then set in a security key at the bottom you can use >>(WEP) key or (WPA) key then u hit .APPLY then ur exit out of the router contol page go to ur laptop. get the dc drive for ur wireless usb adapter . and install the drivers it will ask you have way into the install to connect ur wireless usb adapter do not connet that till you install the network drivers frist then when that is installed hit on the network icon for ur wireless usb adapter and enter ur network id and security key you set up from ur desktop pc at the router contepl page . when you place in ur network id and security key hit on apply . you will see the network box go to >>100% then ur online . from ur laptop . open explorer or firefox and ur see the home page it is set on then you have ur desktop online and ur laptop. but ur wireless network is not as strong as wire internet . if you have a 2 port router for 2 ethernet cabel to run off ur network on desktop and laptop will be more strong . but i think you want wireless internet so u can use ur laptop in any room .
