Beats me. I have 2 cats. One has been with me 15 years and the other 14 years. They are my kids. If anyone has a problem with that they don't have to visit me.

Dogs are some of the more cool animals, but they are still just that animals. At least I'm hoping your pet does not yet have a place at the dinner table, or get under the covers to stay warm at night. I would protect my family with my life. I don't think I would loose my life or my freedom over a pet.

I don't know. I don't have or want children. But I do have dogs. I jokingly refer to them as my "furkids", but realize that there's doubtless going to be a difference between one's own offspring and one's pets, regardless of how beloved those pets are. Having said that, though, I'm personally very content to have dogs instead of kids. My dogs are members of my family, so to speak.

I don't know.
I love my dog just like she was my first child. Of course, I am due to have my *real* first child in 2 weeks... so my opinion might change when I do actually hold my first born child. But, my dog is like my baby to me. She gets excited to see me when I come home. She kisses me all over my face. She gives me hugs. Sometimes she just wants to be held and when she does, she will let you know by putting her paws on your knees and batting her little watery eyes up at you. She gets in trouble and gets little swats on the butt like a child would get. Yeah, she will never be able to talk... she will only live to be 15 at most... but, I still think of her as my first baby... maybe like an adopted baby rather than a biological baby, but I still love her like my child as strange as people may think it is.
Oh and to add, since a poster below me mentioned it..... yes, my dog does sleep under the covers right in between me and my husband. :D She even has her own pillow... yes yes... go ahead and laugh.... and my husband is the one who first wanted her to sleep in the bed with us. He loves her just as much as I do. I guess its a good thing I found a guy who loves animals like I do. He calls her his "first baby". LOL.

People like to think that their widdle precious is the best thing out there, to compare them to an animal is insulting.
I have animals and a kid, and i love em all to bits, it's nbever bothered me one way or the other.

Are you kidding?? I don't have kids and I have a kitten and I looooove my kitten. But the human bond between people is waaay different than with an animal. This has to be a joke question.

If your child and pet were both hanging off a cliff, and you could only save one, which would you choose?

I talk about my dogs all most as much as my son sometimes. I guess it depends on whether the person cares a lot about animals.
Some people don't know the bond you get with a well loved pet. Their loss I think.

I think people with pets and no kids tend to think that. having a real child changes their minds. Pets never get more exciting. Kids mature and have new capabilities.
