The Mirena Coil has been recommended to me by my Gyny. I have been browsing the web but I am not inspired. So many people seem to experience very bad pains. Could this be minimised with General Anaesthetic? Does anyone know if this is a trendy contraceptive or is it really beneficial. I have tried most pills but they all affect me badly over time, weight gain, moods and breast tenderness. I am not convinced that this will work well for me as a result. I am 42 years of age and I would welcome any advice anyone may have to offer me please.
Thank you for reading!

Hi,

Must admit I don't have the Mirena version (I wanted the one without the hormones)

But I do have the coil fitted (for the last 2 yrs) and it is great, slightly crampy stomach on fitting, only a short twinge (take Ibuprofen 1/2 hr before your appt)

two slightly crampy periods afterwards, and now absolutely brill don't know it's there, would definately recommend it.

Hope this helps

p.s I had trouble with the pill beforehand , and prefer to know that any hormones circulating are my own, much better now than when on pill , I used to have constant headaches, never realised they were down tio the pill until I came off !

I say go for it! I had the Mirena fitted in January this year and for me it's the best thing I could have done. I used to suffer terrible with PMT and heavy painful periods and now I only very occasionally have a slight bleeding with minimal cramping. i was advised to take 2 paracetamols or 2 ibuprofen tablets 1/2 and hour before my appointment and will admit I felt very crampy for the remainder of the day, and bled lightly for the next 3-4 wks, but the benefits of not having regular periods/PMT have totally outweighed all these negative effects, and now I feel fab!

I never had any pain at all with this, however I was on a 3 day period before starting, and it prolonged it to 7/10 days.It did cause big lumps in my legs, best way I can describe it, think of "sleeping police men" the ramps used in the roads, well ,I had 3 of these on the tops of my right leg, and 2 on my left, they were very hard and red, ached all the time.My doctor when he saw them, took out the coil there and then,as a result he no longer advises it to any of his patients. The lumps eventually went down but it took 17mths.I was 43 at the time, and was advised to try it as i had a lot of headaches 2 wks after every period, for at least 3 days at a time,he thought it would calm things down, it didn't.I still have the headaches ,but I'm back to a 3 day period, and still rather temperamental.I have now descided not to bother with anything ,because it doesnt seem to be worth all the trouble.

I had mirena coil fitted last march (2005). It was fantastic for the first year no periods and only very slight period pain. Unfortunately i then started having periods again went to docs to get checked out and was told coil no longer working. Went to have it removed and they couldnt find it ended up having to go into hospital and have it done under general anaesthetic. Now having loads of problems and been told probably cant have any more children.
WORSE thing i ever tried please think very carefully before you go ahead.

Hi, Iv had the Mirena for 4 and a half years now and due to have it taken out in 6 months. It wasnt painful just abit uncomfortable wen being fitted and for a couple of hours after, but paracetamol sorted that out.
Was also on the pill, but put on too much weight wen after have a planned baby so dr advised too fat to go back on, so told me about the Mirena.
Periods havent stopped but just get maybe 2 day show (not heavy).
Only prob I have and this may or may not b linked is more facial hair on the chin. not attractive (im Sure)
Anyway, good luck wot every u choose to do. xxx

I have the Mirena. I'm 39 with 5 kids. I love it no more painful periods, and no PMS. There was no pain for me when it was inserted. I say give it a try.

You can get Mirena as an implant in your arm as well - I'd do it that way rather than the coil. My sister has it and it is famously painful. There again, I have Depo (10 years now) which is an injection and that is terrific. No pain, no pills to remember and hey! no periods. Fantastic!

I was fitted with the mirana coil after being rushed to hospital for a blood transfusion. Mine was mainly to stop heavy periods due to menopause and since then no pain, no periods, it for me was really brilliant and still is (I'm 48)
